Blood Flow Restriction Therapy
Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Training, is a unique rehabilitative modality utilized by the clinicians at The Fitness Lab to promote strength gains in a multitude of patient populations.
Typically, high load strength training is the gold standard for building strength and muscle mass, however, this technique may become limited when poor exercise tolerance or injury exists. When these circumstances exist, BFR can be utilized to mimic similar strength gains without heavy loading.
Blood Flow Restriction training involves utilization of a cuff (tourniquet) to promote blood flow occlusion during exercise. Lots of clinics use cheap BFR systems with no way of monitoring real time blood pressure monitoring which is key for optimal results. At The Fitness Lab we only use FDA-approved class III personalized tourniquet systems, which contain a Doppler system to regulate blood pressure throughout treatment. This assures that your blood pressure is always in a safe range and guarantees the most accurate and effective treatment while producing optimal results.
When blood flow occlusion is paired with low intensity exercise and high repetitions, we can produce similar results to high intensity heavy loaded training. This is extremely beneficial to promote the most successful rehabilitative environment and expedite the recovery process. Populations that may benefit from BFR include but are not limited to: patients and clients with weight bearing precautions, post operative conditions, poor exercise tolerance, chronic pain, overuse injuries, stress fractures, etc.
