Imaging
Unknown to many, the Doctoral level physical therapists‘ at The Fitness LAB are licensed to order many types of medical imaging. Imaging is a useful resource for musculoskeletal conditions and is an invaluable tool for Medical Professionals when used appropriately. Imaging such as MRI, X-ray, CT scans, and bone scans are prime examples of practical diagnostic imaging that facilitates accurate diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, and assessment of injuries and dysfunctions that the physical therapists at The Fitness LAB address on a daily basis.
What exactly is ultrasound imaging?
Ultrasound imaging is used to help with the application of physical therapy treatments by highlighting the areas that need work. For example, the imaging used can distinguish the differences between a healthy adult and one who is struggling with a painful condition, such as low back pain. Someone with low back pain (or pain in any other area of their body, for that matter) will illustrate asymmetry in a side-to-side image, decreased muscle thickness, and a decreased ability to thicken muscles while contracting them.
This form of diagnostic treatment can also be used to determine future risk of low back pain or injury by looking for an imbalance in the lumbar multifidus muscle in the back. Additionally, it can distinguish between the changes in muscle thickness during specific exercises when comparing healthy adults with those experiencing pain.
How will ultrasound imaging benefit me?
Ultrasound imaging is supported by a biofeedback tool that is used to enhance exercise effectiveness. Biofeedback during an ultrasound is seen visually, as you can actually see involuntary muscles contract. It can determine where your pain is rooted and the areas of the body that are affected by it. By doing this, our Denver, Highlands Ranch, South Denver, Evergreen, Greenwood Village, and Parker, CO (Field House and Mainstreet) physical therapists are better able to prescribe successful treatments and exercises for treating each patient’s specific condition.
Ultrasound imaging used in tandem with motor control training has been proven to decrease side-to-side asymmetry, increase multifidus cross-sectional areas, and reduce pain at an average of 50%. Additionally, according to a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, “recent evidence suggests increased contracted thickness of the lumbar multifidus one week after a spinal manipulation was predictive of larger improvements in low back pain-related disability.”
How do I add ultrasound imaging to my treatment plan?
Ultrasound imaging has been known to help aid in the treatment of numerous conditions. It is generally used as a testing tool to help determine the best course of treatment for patients, typically in regard to exercise plans.
If you are interested in gaining the benefits of ultrasound imaging, contact our Denver, Highlands Ranch, South Denver, Evergreen, Greenwood Village, or Parker, CO (Field House and Mainstreet) physical therapy office today to schedule a consultation with one of our licensed physical therapists. They will evaluate the nature of your condition to determine if ultrasound imaging will be a necessary and/or beneficial addition to your treatment plan.
