The science behind laser therapy
How does Class 4 laser therapy work?
Class 4 laser therapy uses targeted light energy to help reduce pain, manage inflammation, and support tissue healing. At The Fitness Lab, we incorporate it into personalized care to help you move more comfortably and recover after an injury or surgery, when appropriate.

When therapeutic light is absorbed by molecules within tissue, it can influence cellular activity through a process called photobiomodulation (PBM). These responses may help regulate inflammation and support processes involved in tissue repair. Depending on the treatment settings, laser therapy can also produce gentle warmth and increase local blood flow.
01
Cellular activity and tissue repair
Your cells need energy to carry out their normal functions, including repair. Laboratory research shows that certain wavelengths and doses of light can influence mitochondria—the structures inside cells that produce energy—and ATP, the fuel cells use. These effects help explain how laser therapy may support processes involved in tissue healing.
02
Local circulation
Laser treatment can increase circulation in the treated area, depending on the settings and application. Blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients that tissues need for normal function and repair. Some treatments also create a comfortable warming sensation.
03
Pain and inflammation
Therapeutic light can influence signals involved in pain and inflammation. For some conditions, treatment may help reduce discomfort and regulate the inflammatory response. Your therapist monitors changes in symptoms, movement, and activity tolerance to determine whether laser therapy is helping you progress.
Treatment guided by your recovery
Your physical therapist selects the treatment area, dose, and application method based on your condition, stage of healing, and response. When appropriate, laser therapy can complement rehabilitation after an injury or surgery, with treatment guided by your surgical precautions and recovery milestones.
We combine laser therapy with the hands-on care, mobility work, and progressive strengthening appropriate for your needs.
Our goal: reduce pain, help manage inflammation, support tissue healing, and make it easier to participate in the movement and exercise that help you regain function.

Relief that supports your recovery
Conditions We Treat
with Class 4 Laser Therapy
From plantar fasciitis and tendon pain to arthritis, sports injuries, and recovery after surgery, laser therapy may be a useful addition to your care.
At The Fitness Lab, your physical therapist evaluates your condition and stage of healing to determine how laser may help reduce pain, manage inflammation, and support tissue recovery as part of your personalized treatment plan.
01 /
Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon & foot pain
Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, and foot or ankle injuries can make walking, running, and standing uncomfortable. Laser therapy may complement mobility work, strengthening, and progressive loading to help manage symptoms as you rebuild your tolerance for activity.
02 /
Tendon, muscle & sports injuries
Tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, rotator cuff tendinopathy, muscle strains, and ligament sprains can interrupt work, exercise, and everyday activities. Your therapist may incorporate laser therapy to help manage pain during rehabilitation focused on restoring strength, movement, and your ability to meet the demands of your sport or routine.
03 /
Arthritis & joint pain
Knee osteoarthritis and other painful joint conditions can make stairs, lifting, and getting moving more difficult. Laser therapy may help ease symptoms in selected conditions while rehabilitation addresses joint mobility, muscle strength, and activity tolerance. Your evaluation helps determine the most appropriate approach for your shoulder, hip, knee, or other joint concerns.
04 /
Back pain, neck pain & muscle tension
Persistent lower back pain, neck discomfort, and muscle-related stiffness can affect sleep, work, and exercise. Laser therapy may complement hands-on treatment and targeted exercise to help manage discomfort. We assess the factors contributing to your symptoms and build a plan to improve movement and daily function.
05 /
Postoperative rehabilitation
Our rehabilitation plans support recovery after procedures such as rotator cuff repair, ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery, and knee or hip replacement. Laser therapy may be considered as an additional tool for symptom management when appropriate for your procedure and stage of recovery. Treatment follows your surgeon’s precautions, incision status, and rehabilitation milestones.
06 /
Tissue healing & wound recovery
Therapeutic laser may support processes involved in tissue repair and has been studied as an addition to standard care for certain slow-healing wounds. For an open wound or healing surgical incision, treatment requires specific assessment and coordination with your surgeon or wound-care provider. Your therapist will help determine whether laser is appropriate within your broader recovery plan.
Your condition guides your care. The benefits of laser therapy vary by diagnosis and treatment protocol. We monitor your response and combine appropriate treatments with the movement, strengthening, and rehabilitation needed to help you regain function.

Walking comfortably, keeping up with your family, lifting confidently, or returning to the trail—your goals give treatment direction. We track changes in symptoms, movement, strength, and activity tolerance, adjusting your plan as you progress.
Our goal is to help you feel better, move better, and build the capacity to keep doing what matters to you.
Multi-wavelength laser technology
Targeted light.
Treatment tailored to you.
The Fitness Lab uses the ReGen P82 and K-Laser Speciale Plus Med. Both systems offer multiple wavelengths and adjustable settings to customize energy delivery to the treatment area.

ReGen P82
A Class 4 system that combines multiple wavelengths, customizable protocols, and temperature monitoring for targeted therapeutic light delivery.

K-Laser Speciale Plus Med
A multi-wavelength system with a sensor-equipped handpiece that monitors treatment conditions and helps regulate energy delivery.
Why wavelengths and dose matter: wavelength affects how light is absorbed and travels through tissue. Power, treatment time, and the area covered determine how much energy is delivered and how it is distributed. Continuous and pulsed settings provide different ways to deliver that energy. Your therapist selects the parameters for your treatment; ask your clinic which system is available for your visit.

What to expect
during your laser therapy appointment
Class 4 laser therapy is a noninvasive treatment with no needles or incisions. Most patients experience gentle warmth, and the laser portion of a visit typically takes 5–15 minutes. Your physical therapist explains each step, monitors your comfort, and tailors treatment to your condition and recovery goals.
Before you arrive: Wear comfortable clothing that makes the treatment area easy to access, and bring any relevant surgical instructions or updates to your medication list.
01
An assessment focused on you
Your therapist reviews your symptoms, health history, and any recent injuries or surgeries, then assesses your movement and function. We discuss whether laser therapy is appropriate, what we hope to accomplish, and how it fits into your care. Let us know about medications, changes in skin sensation, or previous reactions to treatment.
02
Get comfortable and prepare for treatment
You’ll sit or lie in a comfortable position that allows access to the treatment area. Laser is applied to exposed skin, so clothing or jewelry may need to be moved. You and your therapist wear protective eyewear, and your therapist selects the treatment settings based on your condition, treatment area, and stage of healing.
03
Targeted treatment with gentle warmth
Your therapist moves the laser applicator over the treatment area to deliver the selected dose. Most patients describe a gentle warming sensation, similar to a warm compress moving over the skin. Depending on the settings, you may feel very little heat.
Treatment should remain comfortable. Tell your therapist immediately if you notice excessive heat, stinging, or pain so treatment can be adjusted. More warmth does not necessarily mean a more effective treatment.
The laser portion typically takes 5–15 minutes, depending on the treatment area, dose, and number of areas being addressed. Your full appointment may also include hands-on treatment, mobility work, or strengthening exercises.
04
Check your response and plan your next steps
After treatment, your therapist checks your symptoms and movement, then explains your activity recommendations, home exercises, and follow-up plan. Some people notice an early change in discomfort or ease of movement; others need several visits to determine whether treatment is beneficial.
Laser therapy itself generally does not require downtime. Your injury or surgical precautions still guide your activity—even if the area feels better. We track your response and adjust your plan as you progress.
