Imaging

Ultrasound imaging is used to help with the application of physical therapy treatments by highlighting the areas that need work. For example, the imaging used can distinguish the differences between a healthy adult and one who is struggling with a painful condition, such as low back pain. Someone with low back pain (or pain in any other area of their body, for that matter) will illustrate asymmetry in a side-to-side image, decreased muscle thickness, and a decreased ability to thicken muscles while contracting them.

This form of diagnostic treatment can also be used to determine future risk of low back pain or injury by looking for an imbalance in the lumbar multifidus muscle in the back. Additionally, it can distinguish between the changes in muscle thickness during specific exercises when comparing healthy adults with those experiencing pain.

How do I add ultrasound imaging to my treatment plan?

Ultrasound imaging has been known to help aid in the treatment of numerous conditions. It is generally used as a testing tool to help determine the best course of treatment for patients, typically in regard to exercise plans.
