The science behind red light therapy

How does whole-body red light therapy work?

Red light therapy starts with a simple interaction: light reaching your skin and being absorbed by light-sensitive molecules in your tissues. That absorption can trigger changes in cellular activity—a process called photobiomodulation, or PBM. Our ReGen Pod Q8 delivers red and near-infrared LED light across a broad area of your body while you rest comfortably in the pod.

Red light is visible; near-infrared light is not.
When absorbed by light-sensitive molecules in tissue, both can influence cellular activity. Wavelength, tissue characteristics, and session settings help determine how far the light travels and how much is absorbed.

01

A signal to your cells

Your cells rely on mitochondria to produce much of the energy they need for everyday function. PBM can influence mitochondrial activity and cellular signaling, including processes involved in producing ATP—the molecule cells use to power their work. These interactions help explain how light can affect biological processes involved in tissue maintenance and repair.

02

Different wavelengths. Different reach.

Red light is visible and is absorbed more readily near the skin’s surface. Near-infrared light is invisible and generally travels farther into tissue. The amount that reaches a particular area depends on the wavelength, your tissue characteristics, and how the light is delivered. The Q8 combines both types of light in one session.

03

The right amount of light matters

Light intensity and exposure time work together to determine the dose delivered to your skin. Longer sessions and brighter light do not automatically produce a better response. Following the selected session settings helps keep your exposure controlled and consistent. Our team will explain your program, preparation, and session length so you know what to expect.

Useful information. Realistic expectations.

Red light therapy benefits:
what does research show?

Whether your goal is staying active, sleeping better, improving skin appearance, or finding greater comfort, understanding the evidence can help you decide where red light therapy fits.

01 /

Sports performance & recovery

Your muscles work hard. Give recovery a place in your routine.

Studies applying red and near-infrared light directly to muscle groups have reported improvements in strength, resistance to fatigue, and recovery after exercise—including reduced post-workout soreness. PBM can influence mitochondrial activity and ATP production, the processes that help power muscle cells. Light dose, treatment timing, and delivery all help determine the response.

02 /

Skin appearance & texture

Smoother texture. A more refreshed appearance. Research using large-area and full-body light systems has reported improvements in skin complexion, texture, and collagen density after a series of treatments. These findings point to potential changes in how skin looks and feels over time.

03 /

Sleep & rest

Better rest matters to how you feel throughout the day. A study involving female basketball players reported improved sleep quality and higher melatonin levels following two weeks of whole-body red light exposure. If sleep is one of your goals, we can discuss these findings and how sessions might fit into your routine.

04 /

Relaxation & self-care

Give yourself time to settle in and unwind. In interviews with people undergoing whole-body PBM for fibromyalgia, participants described sessions as relaxing, soothing, and comfortable. Some also reported feeling more relaxed at bedtime and better able to rest. These patient experiences highlight the value of both the session itself and making regular time for your well-being.

05 /

Inflammation & oxidative stress

Intense exercise can increase reactive molecules that place stress on muscle cells—a process called oxidative stress. Research on targeted PBM has reported reduced markers of oxidative damage and increased activity of certain antioxidant defenses, alongside changes in inflammatory markers. These findings help researchers understand how light may influence the muscle’s response to demanding activity.

06 /

Injury care & rehabilitation

Getting back to the activities you enjoy starts with understanding what your body needs. Research on targeted PBM has reported pain reduction in injured athletes. At The Fitness Lab, we can explain how targeted light treatments, whole-body sessions, and physical therapy differ—and help you choose services that fit your recovery goals.

07 /

Fibromyalgia & widespread pain

When pain affects everyday life, greater comfort can make a meaningful difference. A randomized clinical trial in people with fibromyalgia reported reduced pain, improved quality of life, and less fear of movement following a course of whole-body PBM. These findings offer encouraging reasons to discuss light therapy as part of a broader care plan.

Research informs our approach. Your goals guide the conversation.

The studies linked here used different devices and treatment programs from our ReGen Pod Q8. Sports performance, exercise-related muscle stress, and injury-pain findings above relate to targeted treatments; benefits for exercise recovery and performance with whole-body pods are still being established.

Make time for your well-being. We’ll help you take the next step.

Meet the ReGen Pod Q8

Whole-body light.
One dedicated session.

The Fitness Lab uses the ReGen Pod Q8, an LED bed designed for broad-area red and near-infrared light exposure. Its adjustable programs control how the light is delivered.

The manufacturer lists five wavelengths: 633, 660, 810, 850, and 940 nm. Red and near-infrared channels provide different light-delivery options; multiple wavelengths alone do not establish a superior clinical result.

Adjustable light delivery

Touchscreen programs and continuous or pulsed light settings offer different ways to deliver a session. The manufacturer lists light exposure times of 10–18 minutes; allow additional time for preparation and questions.

Settings matter more than impressive numbers. Electrical power consumption is not the light dose reaching your skin. Ask our team which session settings are used and what evidence relates to your goal.

Comfortable care. Clear next steps.

What to expect
at your red light session

Make time for yourself, with a team to guide you. From discussing your goals to getting comfortable in our ReGen Pod Q8, we’ll explain each step so you can arrive prepared and settle into your session with confidence.

Before you arrive: confirm your appointment location, pricing, and clothing instructions with our team. Light sessions generally last about 10–20 minutes, with additional time for preparation and questions.

01

Start with your goals

Tell us what brings you in—whether you’re interested in rest, comfort, skin appearance, or incorporating light therapy into your wellness routine. We’ll discuss what the service may offer and review relevant health information, including medications, light sensitivity, and any previous reactions to light treatments.

02

Get comfortable and prepare

We’ll guide you through clothing, skin exposure, positioning, and eye-protection instructions. Once you’re comfortably positioned in the pod, we’ll explain the selected program and show you how to stop the session or reach staff whenever you need assistance.

03

Take time to recharge

Lie back while the pod delivers red and near-infrared LED light across a broad area of your body. The program runs while you rest, giving you approximately 10–20 minutes to step away from the demands of your day. You may notice warmth during the session; let our team know if anything feels uncomfortable.

04

Decide what comes next

After your session, share how you feel and ask any remaining questions. We’ll discuss what to pay attention to afterward and when to review your experience. Your goals, comfort, and response will help guide whether additional sessions make sense for you.
