The science behind the cold

How does whole-body
cryotherapy work?

Step into the Artica Ethos and experience a brief, invigorating cold-air session. As your skin cools, your body responds through its nerves and circulation. At The Fitness Lab, adjustable settings and personal guidance help you find the experience that fits your comfort and recovery goals.

01

Feel the cold. Stay in control.

Cold air moves across your skin, drawing heat away from the surface and creating the distinct cryotherapy sensation. Choose still cascade cooling or optional wind chill, then adjust temperature and airflow from inside the Ethos within your selected program. Our team helps you get familiar with the settings before you begin.

02

A natural response to the cold.

Your skin senses the cold and sends signals to your brain. Small blood vessels near the surface narrow to help conserve warmth. This natural response connects the cold you feel with changes in circulation and nerve activity during your session.

03

A return to warmth. Recovery with purpose.

After your session, your skin gradually rewarms and circulation readjusts. Whole-body cryotherapy may help ease post-exercise muscle soreness and improve how recovered you feel. At The Fitness Lab, we tailor the experience to your training, comfort, and goals—helping you make recovery a purposeful part of your routine.

What does research show?

Whole-body cryotherapy may help ease post-exercise soreness and improve how recovered you feel, with additional research exploring sleep, mood, and the body’s response to cold. At The Fitness Lab, we help you connect those possibilities with your goals.

Inflammatory responses

Explore the response behind recovery.

Cold exposure influences circulation, nerve activity, and some of the chemical signals involved in inflammation. Research has found changes in selected inflammatory markers following whole-body cryotherapy, helping explain why cold exposure continues to be explored as a recovery approach.
