The science behind the cold
How does whole-body
cryotherapy work?
Step into the Artica Ethos and experience a brief, invigorating cold-air session. As your skin cools, your body responds through its nerves and circulation. At The Fitness Lab, adjustable settings and personal guidance help you find the experience that fits your comfort and recovery goals.

Your skin starts the response.
The magnified view shows the sensory nerves and small blood vessels that respond as cold air moves across your skin.

01
Feel the cold. Stay in control.
Cold air moves across your skin, drawing heat away from the surface and creating the distinct cryotherapy sensation. Choose still cascade cooling or optional wind chill, then adjust temperature and airflow from inside the Ethos within your selected program. Our team helps you get familiar with the settings before you begin.

02
A natural response to the cold.
Your skin senses the cold and sends signals to your brain. Small blood vessels near the surface narrow to help conserve warmth. This natural response connects the cold you feel with changes in circulation and nerve activity during your session.
03
A return to warmth. Recovery with purpose.
After your session, your skin gradually rewarms and circulation readjusts. Whole-body cryotherapy may help ease post-exercise muscle soreness and improve how recovered you feel. At The Fitness Lab, we tailor the experience to your training, comfort, and goals—helping you make recovery a purposeful part of your routine.

Whole-body cold.
A personal approach.
Recovery needs change with your training, health, and day-to-day demands. Cryotherapy is one option to consider alongside appropriate training load, sleep, nutrition, and rehabilitation. Start with what you want to accomplish and what a worthwhile change would look like.
The Fitness Lab brings together rehabilitation, exercise, and performance services. If pain or an injury is limiting you, arrange a physical therapy evaluation to understand the problem and build a plan. A cold session does not replace that assessment.

Whole-body cryotherapy benefits:
What does research show?
Whole-body cryotherapy may help ease post-exercise soreness and improve how recovered you feel, with additional research exploring sleep, mood, and the body’s response to cold. At The Fitness Lab, we help you connect those possibilities with your goals.
01 /
Post-workout muscle soreness
Give hard-working muscles some attention.
A challenging workout can leave you feeling sore long after you finish. Whole-body cryotherapy may help ease that post-exercise muscle soreness, making it an option to consider as part of your recovery routine.
02 /
Perceived fatigue & recovery
Make room to recharge.
Recovery includes how you feel between workouts. Studies in trained runners and selected athlete groups have reported improvements in perceived tiredness and recovery after repeated cryotherapy sessions. We’ll help you explore how the experience fits your activity level and recovery goals.
03 /
Recovery between sessions
Make recovery part of your training week.
When workouts, work, and everyday responsibilities fill your calendar, recovery deserves a place too. With a recommended average cold exposure of 2–3 minutes and an adjustable maximum of 6 minutes, cryotherapy gives you a brief, dedicated experience to build into your broader routine. Our team helps you select your session duration.
04 /
Strength, power & performance
Your sport. Your training. Your priorities.
Whether you’re building strength, preparing for a race, or returning to an activity you love, your recovery choices should reflect what you’re working toward. Our team helps you consider cryotherapy alongside your training schedule, workload, and individual response.
05 /
Inflammatory responses
Explore the response behind recovery.
Cold exposure influences circulation, nerve activity, and some of the chemical signals involved in inflammation. Research has found changes in selected inflammatory markers following whole-body cryotherapy, helping explain why cold exposure continues to be explored as a recovery approach.
06 /
Comfort & persistent symptoms
Comfort matters in everyday life.
Research in people with fibromyalgia has reported improved health-related quality of life when repeated whole-body cryotherapy was added to usual care. If ongoing discomfort affects your activities, our team can help you consider whether cryotherapy is appropriate alongside your care plan.
07 /
Mood & subjective wellness
A moment to focus on yourself.
A recovery routine can include time for how you feel mentally as well as physically. A study in healthy young adults reported improvements in mood and anxiety scores following repeated cryotherapy sessions, offering an encouraging direction for wellness research.
08 /
Sleep & rest
Rest belongs in your recovery routine.
Research in healthy young adults and selected female athlete groups has reported improvements in aspects of sleep quality following repeated cryotherapy sessions. If rest is one of your priorities, we can discuss how cryotherapy may fit alongside your existing sleep and recovery habits.
