What are trigger points, and how do they affect your performance?
Do you have tight, painful knots that interfere with your athletic performance? Have you noticed that your range of motion is restricted by this ongoing pain? Trigger point therapy is a unique type of treatment that works by applying pressure to knotted areas, also known as trigger points, on the body. This form of therapy alleviates pain, improves muscular imbalances, and encourages inner healing. Many athletes experience muscle tightness and inflammation, which is where trigger point therapy comes in. By relieving pain and tightness, this treatment can significantly improve athletic performance.

Trigger Points and Sports Injuries
Muscle knots and tension are commonly found around the body, especially in those who continuously exert their bodies. A trigger point is a fibrous tissue knot or tight band that is present within or around a muscle. Patients will typically notice a painful or delicate feel to the area. Trigger points can cause real problems for athlete by restricting their range of motion and keeping muscles stiff. They can also weaken muscles, which inhibits their ability to recover quickly or maintain endurance.
Trigger points are believed to develop from a variety of sources, including:
- Acute trauma to a muscle
- Joint problems
- Malnourishment or vitamin deficiencies
- Poor posture
- Repetitive motions or overuse
- Intense stress and anxiety
Trigger points can impair your overall sports performance by causing muscle weakness, fatigue, and restricted movement. Myofascial pain syndrome may occur if the pain is left untreated.
When a trigger point is properly treated, it helps to remove waste chemical buildup and enhances the flow of healthy, oxygenated blood to the affected area. This process aids in promoting healing and maintaining muscles in their best condition.
Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger point therapy is intended to speed recovery from injuries and rectify any muscular imbalances brought on by tight or knotted muscles. It also helps to relieve the symptoms of pain and tender spots around the body.
In order to identify the precise location (trigger point) that needs to be treated, your physical therapist must first conduct a complete assessment of your muscles and tight spots.
After locating the trigger point, your therapist will stretch the affected muscle before directly pressing the constricted muscle fibers. This promotes healing by restoring normal blood circulation to the damaged area, which reduces pain and other symptoms. Trigger point therapy also helps to relax and loosen the muscle. As your range of motion returns to its pre-injury state, you can gradually resume athletics without experiencing pain or discomfort.
Trigger point therapy may be applied using manual (hands-on) therapy techniques such as massage. During recovery, your PT will likely apply these specific healing techniques:
- Trigger point massage: A form of therapeutic therapy that involves targeted massage. By directly hitting the trigger points in your body, this method gets into the deep tissue and relieves tension.
- Dry-needling: Dry-needling is a safe pain management technique in which your therapist inserts a hair-thin needle into the muscle’s trigger point
What Conditions Does Trigger Point Therapy Treat?
Trigger point therapy will normally be incorporated into a treatment plan that includes exercise, massage, and other interventions designed to reduce pain and restore function.
Trigger-point therapy can treat various conditions and injuries, including the following:
- Arthritis
- Sciatica
- Muscle strains
- Knee pain
- Herniated discs
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Back Pain
- Shoulder pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Nerve disorders
- Plantar fasciitis
Your condition tells a lot about your pain and current symptoms. Each patient displays a different level of pain and discomfort, in which your therapist will analyze during treatment.
